Khartoum Tramline Project
A new tramway system will connect the major parts of Khartoum to solve traffic problems and improve mobility for the inhabitants.
COWI has carried out a feasibility study in order to set up a conceptual basis for the proposed tramway system.
The main subject of the feasibility study was the creation of a conceptual basis for a new tramway system in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. Currently no rail-bound public transport exists in the city, which has approximately eight million inhabitants. The previous tramway system was closed in 1962 during the
worldwide period of tramway withdrawals. The study included the investigation of the technical and financial feasibility of the project. Assessing operating costs, revenues as well as investment. Capital costs had a substantial influence on the route choice and the arrangement of the tram network.
The main results of the Study are:
• Feasibility of the construction of a new railbound public transport network connecting the city centres of Khartoum, Omdurman and Khartoum North (Bahri)
• Network layout in three stages: Inauguration: 25 km line length, extension: 92 km line length and completion: 185 km line length
• Infrastructure and technical equipment planning
• Vehicle recommendations
• Operational and organisational planning
• Economic assessment and financial evaluation
• Investment and operational costs calculation
• Integration of the new transport system network into the existing spatial structure of the city and its infrastructure
• Minimisation of the investment costs
• Development of enhancement stages for the future network development.
The feasibility study was carried out by the Tram Khartoum Joint Venture consisting of COWI/ETC Transport Consultants and Schüßler-Plan.
